NOW,
WARMING
Real-time climate data sonification. This video is a short walkthrough of how the sound system actually works. It’s a prototype and very much a work in progress, not a finished piece.

This is an interactive sound prototype that turns real time climate data into a continuously changing soundscape. Global warming is diffuse across time. We see its effects, smaller or larger, in different moments, but it exists as a constant low-level presence rather than a concrete, immediate threat, unlike, for example, encountering a wild animal in the wild. Now, Warming addresses this by sonifying only present moment data, giving listeners a bounded, defined moment rather than an open ended threat.

The system runs as a live, ongoing process rather than a fixed composition. The soundscape updates in response to current data, so each listening session produces a different result. This prototype is part of my MRes research at Glasgow School of Art, which investigates whether this kind of repeated engagement with climate data can influence the distress it typically produces.
